Nationals' free agents signings show Mike Rizzo's contrarian optimism
The Washington Nationals do not think 2020 ever happened. Most of the world wishes that were so. But the Nats have found a way to make it disappear, at least in their minds. They see results from last year’s 60-game season as almost meaningless.
That assumption, at any rate, goes a long way toward explaining almost every one of their offseason moves — and their optimism for 2021.
Maybe the Nats — and General Manager Mike Rizzo — are acting out of self-delusion, still shellshocked after plummeting from winning the World Series in 2019 to tying for last in the National League East at 26-34 in 2020.
